Two decades later, the U. Army Corps of Engineers blocked the flow of the nearby Cumberland River as well. In the process of creating the two lakes, residents of several small towns along and between the rivers were moved, and parts of some towns were permanently flooded. A few local roads and railways had to be re-routed. Engineers also dug out Barkley Canal in order to bring the two rivers and lakes to the same water level. This allowed ships and barges to more easily move goods without locks from the Cumberland and Tennessee river valleys toward the mighty Mississippi River.
In the years after the lakes were created, the new peninsula was slowly converted into a recreation area for hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, and camping.
Now managed by the U. Lake Barkley features great boating recreation and fishing opportunities for residents and tourists up and down the lake. During and after the creation of Lake Barkley, TVA saw that a large peninsula of land would be created and decided to create a massive ,acre recreation area known as Land Between The Lakes. However, several hundred families and many communities would have to be relocated out to create the National Recreation Area. For some, this was the second time they had to move thanks to the government - once with the flooding of the rivers, and twice with the creation of LBL.
The last of the families left in Today, numerous old foundations, a small handful of buildings and cemeteries are all that remains of the past at Land Between The Lakes. However, several campgrounds and attractions have sprung up since the creation of LBL that provide a major economic boost to the Kentucky Lakes Area.
