I must say, the 3 'Gloria' sessions are absolutely fascinating not least because of the amount of in-session smoking that goes on he he. Thank you, Amanda, for sharing your thoughts. Consequently, it is more powerful than CBT in this way. As you change your basic philosophy, the cognitive distortions are eliminated as a byproduct. REBT highlights the significance of secondary disturbance SD which is often the largest factor in life-long endogenous depression, severe anxiety, and panic attacks. REBT maintains that all anger is destructive and teaches individuals appropriate, yet unangry, effective assertiveness.
CBT views some anger as healthy and, although it teaches assertiveness, fails to address uprooting the philosophic core of anger. REBT presents an elegant solution to the self-esteem problem. Based on the notion that we are typically unaware of our deeply imbedded irrational thoughts and how they affect us on a day-to-day basis, Ellis established three guiding principles of REBT…. These are known as the ABCs: activating event, beliefs, and consequences. Disputing irrational beliefs is the primary method of REBT.
There are different kinds of disputations: Functional disputes — questioning whether the belief helps accomplish desired goals. Created by Albert Ellis, REBT is considered by many to be the most holistic of the cognitive approaches, with its particular emphasis on philosophical components for helping others in combination with its evidence-based, efficient, and practical tools.
Rational emotive behaviour therapy has been used effectively in the treatment of: Depression, Suicidal thoughts, Low self-esteem. Recovery from sexual abuse. Cognitive behavioural therapy CBT explores the links between thoughts, emotions and behaviour. It is a directive, time-limited, structured approach used to treat a variety of mental health disorders. It aims to alleviate distress by helping patients to develop more adaptive cognitions and behaviours.
Simply put, there are two key components of CBT. These are core beliefs and automatic thoughts. Core beliefs are the most central beliefs that people have about themselves, others, and the world around them. A client will begin to develop these ideas in childhood as he interacts with others in his world. It also assists the person to find alternative forms that will reduce the psychological distress and improve overall well-being.
This was developed by the American psychologist Albert Ellis in According to Ellis, people have different assumptions about themselves as well as the world around them. These assumptions are vastly different from one person to another. However, the assumptions that the individual has plays a major role in the manner in which he acts and reacts in different situations.
Here, Ellis highlights that some individuals have assumptions that are clearly negative and can destroy individual happiness. These he termed as basic irrational assumptions. For example, the need to be good in everything, the need to be loved and the need to succeed are such irrational assumptions. Through REBT, the individual is taught how to overcome such emotional and behavioral distress by comprehending the irrational assumptions.
